Programming with Max/MSP/Jitter - Beginners workshop (Deutsche Version siehe weiter unten)   // Workshop by Peter Votava // Date: 14.-18.10.2008 // Time: 10:00 – 18:00 // Admission: 165.- EUR   Max/MSP/Jitter is a programming language with a graphical interface to connect music, videos, 3D, MIDI, sensors, networkcommunication, and more. Due to its concept similar to modular synthesizers Max/MSP/Jitter is quickly and relatively easy to learn. Max/MSP/Jitter is both suitable for small applications (i.e. converting mouse movements into midi messages) and complex combinations of various electronic media (i.e. the computation of a realtime score based on the pulses of the participating musicians. see e.g. http://www.heartchamberorchestra.org).   The workshop gives an introduction to the concept of Max/MSP/Jitter and discusses the possibilities to work with sound in both Max5 and Max4.5/4.6 (and its differences):  * Introduction to the concept and user interface of Max5/4.6 * Recording of external sound sources * How to play and control sounds * How to build instruments * Possibilities of sound editing: filters, effects, analysis, automations,... * How to control Max5 patches with MIDI controllers, gamepads,... * How to control external instruments from Max5/4.6 * Realisation of different concepts of sequencers with Max5/4.6 * How to use VST Plug-ins (effects and instruments) * How to convert Max patches into VST/AudioUnit plug-ins via Pluggo for useage in other applications like Ableton Live (currently still only possible with max4.6) * How to use randomness for music production * Discussion and approaches for projectplans of the workshop participants Each participant receives a collection of example patches for further studies.   Requirements: * Own Computer (Mac OS X/Win XP) IMPORTANT: either with no Max on it, an already authorised Max5/4.6, or a running Demo. * Basic knowledge in computer based music creation   Participants have the possibilitiy to buy Max/MSP for 50% of the normal price. Aufgrund des an modulare Synthesizer angelehnten Konzeptes ist ein sehr schnelles und relativ einfach zu erlernendes Programmieren möglich. Max/MSP/Jitter eignet sich gleichermaßen für kleine Anwendungen (z.B. die Umwandlung von Mausbewegungen in MIDI Kontrolldaten) als auch für umfassende Verknüpfungen unterschiedlicher elektronischer Medien (z.B. die Errechnung einer Echtzeitkomposition auf Basis der Pulsfrequenzen der ausführenden Musiker. Siehe http://www.heartchamberorchestra.org).   Der Workshop gibt eine Einführung in das Konzept von Max/MSP/Jitter und wird sich mit den Möglichkeiten zur Audiobearbeitung sowohl in Max5 als auch Max4.6 beschäftigen: * Einführung in das Konzept und die Benutzerführung von Max5/4.6 * Aufnehmen externer Klangquellen * Abspielen von Sounds und steuern der Abspielparameter * Eigene Instrumente bauen * Möglichkeiten zur Soundbearbeitung: Filter, Effekte, Klanganalyse, Automatisierungen,... * Kontrollieren von Max5/4.6 durch MIDI Controller, Gamepads,... * Steuern externer Instrumente mit Max5/4.6 via MIDI * Umsetzung verschiedener Sequenzerkonzepte mit Max5/4.6 * Einbindung von VST Plug-ins (Effekte und Instrumente) * Konvertieren eines Max-Patches in ein VST/AudioUnit Plug-In via Pluggo zur Verwendung in anderen Programmen wie Ableton Live (derzeit noch nur mit Max 4.6 möglich) * Die Verwendung von Zufall in der musikalischen Praxis * Besprechung und Lösungsvorschläge für Projektpläne der Workshopteilnehmer/innen Jede/r Teilnehmer/in bekommt am Ende des Workshops eine Sammlung an Patches mit Anwendungsbeispielen für weiterführendes Arbeiten.   Benötigt wird: * Eigener Computer (Mac/Win) WICHTIG: Entweder ohne Max, mit bereits authorisiertem Max5/4.6 oder einer zum Workshoptermin noch funktionierenden Demoversion. * Grundkenntnisse in computer-basierter Musikproduktion   Alle Workshopteilnehmer haben die Möglichkeit, Max/MSP zu ca. 50% des Normalpreises zu kaufen ($250 statt $495).
