INDEX held its inaugural festival in August 2011 in New York City. The aim was to bring together individuals and groups who cognitively engage media culture. The mission, to focus on projects that blur the vocabulary of science and art, dissect the media that describes our culture today. Through over 40 artists, guest curators, multiple venues, a series of panel discussions, educational programming, and radio and television broadcasts of live performances, Index certainly held to its mission.
On December 10, INDEX will host an event that will showcase the festival and bring the “[Mis] Adventures” event to General Public. It is an event that focuses on artists who repurpose, hack or deconstruct tools to produce sound and/or light for time-based performances. In a Frankenstonian spirit, these artists fashion composite instruments, for the purpose of engaging further into the intangible experience. Guest performers Robert Heel and Victoria Keddie will participate in a live performance and video mix recording done by E.S.P. TV’s Scott Kiernan. This will broadcast on E.S.P. TV on Manhattan Public Access in New York City, (http://vimeo.com/channels/esptv) as well as on “Experimental 1/2 Hour” in Portland, Oregon (http://experimentalhalfhour.com/). In addition we will present a representation of Kerry Downey and Lea Bertucci's video and sound installation, “One Day We Will Fix The Barn Door” presented at “Fill The Barn” exhibit during the INDEX Festival.
A merchandise and information table of festival documentation as well as artists’ editions, books, etc. will be on hand at event. A slide show marking the highlights of INDEX will be on display, as well as works by Ryan Brennan, Living Exercises, Dan Perrone, Windguitar, and Twistycat recordings.
A cooperation between INDEX, General Public and fluctuating images, curated by Victoria Keddie, Cornelia and Holger Lund, and Kristin Trethewey.
