Chihei Hatakeyama is a sound artist and musician living on the outskirts of Tokyo and has performed for years under his given name and also as one half of the electroacoustic duo Opitope, along with Tomoyoshi Date. Hatakeyama makes polychromes memory-evoking soundscapes with various recorded materials of electric, acoustic instruments such as electric guitars, vibraphone, and piano. He released on Kranky, Room 40, Under the Spire, Hibernate Records, Magic Book Records, Home Nomal, OwnRecords and Spekk (as Opitope).

Michael Chinen was born in Honolulu in 1982. He did his undergraduate study at the University of Washington, studying composition under Richard Karpen. He has developed audio software for composition independently as well as in the industry and is also one of the developers of the widespread opensource audio software Audacity. He received a B.M. in composition and a B.S. in computer science in 2005. From 2005-2006 he studied sound synthesis in Japan at Tokyo Denki University under Naotoshi Osaka and from 2007-2009 Electro-Acoustic Music at Darthmouth College. Currently he is a research fellow at TU Berlin. In January 2010 he became member of "Institute for Algorhythmics."
