The Continuing Hannah Arendt Public Working Group
Summer 2012: Arendt’s On Revolution
The summer gathering is dedicated to Hannah Arendt’s book On Revolution. In light of Tahrir Square, Occupy, and a worldwide revival of politics, Arendt’s focus on how to preserve political freedom and how this is done, and undone, remains central. Arendt’s most important work for the public realm, it focuses primarily on public life and what constitutes a successful revolution to secure it. As a result, the book poses crucial matters for artists, writers, political thinkers, historians, all those working in and for the public realm, and anyone concerned with public events or public principles.
The working group is a forum in which to think together. The text is read out loud around a table and provides a basis for discussion. We will meet at General Public every Saturday through mid-August, at 11 am.
The gatherings are free, open to all, and one can join at any point. No preparation or prior knowledge is needed.
The sessions are led by Los Angeles and Berlin-based writer and educator Fred Dewey.
Hosted by Michael Schultze of General Public.
