_____-micro research [berlin]" in collaboration with "Institute of Algorhythmics" presents:
“/mode +v noise” is a project from GOTO10, an international collective of artists and computer programmers, dedicated to FLOSS and digital arts. It is based on IRC, the oldest text-based Internet chat environment. The project intervenes in the fabric of the IRC environment and exploits its native tools and protocols, and, similar to livecoding, explores the use of text as a interface for making music. By chatting to 'bots' (scripts or programmes that connect to the IRC channel and appear as users) in various phrases, filling the screen with ASCII patterns, users can simultaneously make music.
/mode +v uses IRC Python bots communicating with Pure Data and SuperCollider audio synthesis applications via OSC (Open Sound Control) to create an interactive multi participant music composition/performance environment on the chat server. This chat environment can be logged into and used/played by remote participants as well as local participants with the results monitored on an Icecast radio station and projected live in an installation environment.
